Huai Khwang Subway :: Description

The Hwaykwang station serves mainly the vast old Thai neighborhood regions behind the street facades, plus a few businesses along that segment of Ratchadapisek Road. There are only a few highrise office buildings. This stretch of Ratchadapisek is well known for its men's entertainment nightlife along the main road, but it's quite different behind the facade.

The neighborhoods on the west are overwhelmingly lowrise apartment and condo buildings of the cheap variety, nearly chock full side-by-side, cut apart by a maze of narrow streets and alleys. There is little exposed dirt in this cement puzzle. The apartments/condos are typically 5 to 8 levels, many old with no lift, plus somewhat higher ones that are more recent.

The neighborhoods to the east have some houses but are still dominated by apartment and condo blocks.

As discussed elsewhere, Bangkok grew up from the river to the west (today's central business district, plus Nonthaburi where most government offices are), spreading east. In the panoramas below, the distant highrises to the west are along the Vipawadi Rangsit Road and Phahonyothin Road, and to the south you can see the distant highrise region between Sukhumvit Road and Petchburi Road. To the east in the distance is Bangkapi.
