Phloen Chit (E2) Skytrain :: Description
The Ploenchit station serves six purposes:
- Residential access, such as:
- north of the station, the old and somewhat upper class Thai housing neighborhood north of the station, the s0-called Nai Lert region
- northeast being Sukhumvit soi 1, which has Thai and older highrise condos and apartments
- south being soi Ruamrudee, which has some luxury highrise apartments and condominiums
- southeast being Sukhumvit soi 2, an old Thai neighborhood of class
- Embassy access along Wittayu (Wireless) Road, the location of some major embassies such as the American and British
- World class shopping in All Seasons Place, a 500 meter walk down Wireless Road or soi Ruamrudee
- A few luxury hotels down Wireless or Ruamrudee such as the Conrad (attached to All Seasons Place) and Plaza Athenee, and the Marriott on Sukhumvit soi 2
- A very short walk to the western Nana entertainment region, as covered on the Nana station region, the next station east just less than a kilometer
- A few highrise office buildings
An the expressway entrance/exit ramp is located right at the foot of the Ploenchit station. However, the median prevents entry from the south side. At this juncture, you can only enter the expressway northbound. The southbound entry is by taking Wittayu Road north to Petchburi Rd., turning right, then turning onto the entrance ramp there. For those south of Ploenchit, it's the same except that to go northbound on the expressway it's much better to head south on Wittaya to Rama 4 Road and get on that entrance ramp.
The Ploenchit station is located right where Sukhumvit Road officially begins, with "soi zero" located under the expressway. The road does not end; it just changes name to Ploenchit Road right at the expressway and railroad crossing.
The Phloenchit station has the feel of being in the city center but it is sandwiched in-between the high class shopping districts west (Chidlom, Siam) and the tourist center immediately west (Nana) and is immediately surrounded largely by old Thai shophouse structures.
