Thong Lo (E6) Skytrain :: Description
ThongLor Region Description
(East #6) The ThongLor skytrain station serves the ThongLor Rd. (Sukhumvit 55) region on the north side, which is primarily residential and a main expat housing region, with many luxury highrise condominiums and apartments, as well as nice houses.
The south side is primarily sleepy old Thai neighborhoods.
The ThongLor area is fairly self-sufficient, with a wide choice of
- nice restaurants
- world class grocery stores
- small modern shopping malls
- and a variety of shops
Many nightclubs are scattered around, but they are medium to high class. They are all Thai, Japanese and Korean, but the Thai nightclubs allow foreigners, and there are many westerners albeit a small percentage. There are no gaudy go-gos nor pickup joints, unlike the Nana-Asoke tourist region.
ThongLor neighborhoods are mature, whereby all houses are at least 15 years old, though there are some fairly large houses and yards. New highrise condominiums and apartments are still sprouting up.
ThongLor Rd. is also Sukhumvit soi 55, a 4-lane artery (plus two lanes for parking or loading = 6 lanes) connecting Sukhumvit Rd to Petchburi Rd., both ends ending at a T intersection. The sois running perpendicular to ThongLor (parallel to Sukhumvit) are ThongLor soi 1 thru Thonglor soi 25. The even numbered (eastern) sois mostly connect to Ekkamai (Sukhumvit 63) and also have dual names, e.g., ThongLor soi 20 is Ekkamai soi 21. To the west is the vast "green route" network of little 2-way sois which continue all the way to Sukhumvit 21 (Asoke), but some can be a pain during rush hour.
Traffic on Sukhumvit Rd. is heavy, and it can jam on ThongLor, too, during rush hour. Traffic on Petchburi Rd. generally moves much better. To go to the Sathorn-Silom area, many people get onto Rama 4 Road by turning left at Sukhumvit and then right at the light between Sukhumvit 63 and Sukhumvit 71.
Expressway access is not close but not far. It is available via the RamIndra expressway, by heading to Sukhumvit Rd., turning left, then just past Sukhumvit 71 is the entrance ramp going north. The Ram Indra entrance ramp going south requires going thru considerably more traffic and waiting at a light to make a right turn. Those living way down ThongLor near Petchburi Rd. will find it quicker to get onto the westbound expressway by cutting over to Ekkamai, then exit at Petchburi, turning right at the light there. To go west on the expressway, turn left at the first major road, then left again at Rama 9 and the entrance ramp is right there. To go eastbound (such at to the airport, Chonburi, or eastern suburbs such as Bangkapi), continue on Petchburi Rd. and take the rightmost flyover. Continue on Petchburi-Pattakarn to the first light which is at Sri Nakharin, turn left, then get on the loop for the expressway entrance, e.g., heading to the airport (follow the airport signs for going east).
